Corrugated boxboard, also known as corrugated cardboard, is the primary source of raw material for manufacturing all types of packaging that logistics processes frequently use. This material is used in most industries worldwide, thanks to its versatility and low cost.
This cardboard is differentiated by the type of paper from which it is made. Cellulose is the main component used to make paperboard. However, it can have three different origins. First, we can obtain it from wood, in which case we are talking about virgin fiber, which is more resistant.
Secondly, recycled paper can also be a source of cellulose for making new paper. However, in this case, the paper is less resistant.
And thirdly, we have cellulose obtained from vegetable fibers. Depending on the strength of the paper, it is destined for one use or another.
Corrugated cardboard is made from the superposition of smooth and corrugated layers of kraft liner board paper. This is the origin of its name and its design properties since this corrugation gives it structure and strength while making it malleable and dynamic.
Its quirky design consists of two sides: on one side are the peaks of the waves that support and distribute the weight, and on the other, the air generated in the middle, which allows it to protect and give shape. From this basic principle, there are three corrugated box flute types:
Single-sided: it is made up of two layers of paper and is used for light transports.
Double face: It offers greater strength as it comprises two corrugated sheets in the middle of the single faces and is often used in industrial logistics processes.
Triple wave: it is composed of three corrugated sheets and is used for carrying heavy items and, in some cases, often competes with certain softwoods.
Corrugated box flute type popularity is well-founded on the benefits it brings to producers and ends consumers. It is economical, flexible, adaptable to almost any design, resistant, easy to handle, and, therefore, of great use in transportation logistics, not to mention that it is biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
It is a very cheap and accessible material for any company. The manufacture of a roll of corrugated cardboard is a reasonably straightforward process, which is noticeable in the cost of the finished product.
On the other hand, it is a lightweight material, which adds little weight to the load we carry inside. In addition, it is pretty flexible so that with a roll of corrugated cardboard, we can wrap our shipments perfectly. Another everyday use of corrugated cardboard is to place it between products to serve as a support while offering them extra protection.
The resistance of corrugated cardboard is excellent, so much so that we could even manufacture furniture with this material. Furthermore, thanks to the geometry of the boxes, they can support loads of up to 800 kilos.
The cardboard absorbs well the impacts coming from blows thanks to the air inside the corrugated paper layer. This makes it ideal for protecting fragile objects. Moreover, due to its enormous versatility, it is possible to manufacture boxes of any shape and size, a handy feature for different products.
In addition to the benefits provided by its material properties, the design possibilities derived from corrugated paper are endless, not to mention that any type of information, both industrial and commercial, can be printed on its surface.
